A heated debate over how to define what qualifies as an ultra-processed food contributed to the resignation of Trump administration health adviser Calley Means ahead of the midterm elections. People familiar with his exit say he was frustrated with a lack of progress toward the release of a white paper with a proposed definition. Means blamed ultra-processed foods for the “chronic disease crisis” in the US. But the food industry has raised concerns over what impact the forthcoming proposed definition could have on lawsuits across the country, and the White House is still scheduled to meet separately with several groups to discuss the issue in the coming weeks — including the National Restaurant Association on Tuesday, the Center for Food Safety on Thursday, and the Consumer Brands Association and Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association in the days after the midterms.
