Charlie Kirk, one year later: What he meant to Black America On Sept. 10, 2025, a rifleman ended Charlie Kirk’s life under a tent at Utah Valley University. He meant with his single shot to end the argument. A year later, the question for Black America remains: whether a people will be addressed as children of God or as a client class, paid for the wreck of their homes. Kirk’s overture to Black Americans is a summons that has outlived him. “You don’t have to stay poor,” he used to say. “You don’t have to accept being worse off than your parents.” That sentence is an act of respect. Kirk was outlining the opposite doctrine to the soft bigotry of low expectations. He insisted that “all communities will do even better when we stop living under” that soft bigotry. “Three things that will almost assuredly keep you out of poverty,” he wrote: Get a job, graduate high school, and do not have children before marriage. Researchers have called this same path the “success sequence.” Among Black millennials who followed it, 96 percent are not poor. In 1959, Black poverty stood near 55 percent, yet more than three quarters of Black children were born to married parents. By 2023, poverty had fallen to roughly 18 percent, yet 69 percent of Black births were to unmarried mothers and only about 45 percent of Black children lived with two parents. As legal racism receded, the family fractured. Kirk would ask: If the cause is Jim Crow, then why did fatherlessness explode after Jim Crow died? “When Lyndon Baines Johnson came in through the Great Society program and started to subsidize single motherhood, it hurt all communities,” he said. “We should be instead subsidizing nuclear families.” The check became a rival to the husband. A young woman could, in Kirk’s phrase, “get married to the government.” Black children in single parent homes are three and a half times more likely to live in poverty than than Black children in intact, married homes. Family structure is a civilizational fact. Kirk did not deny slavery or Jim Crow. What he denied was that a nation that elected a Black president twice with large majorities is still just a plantation, only with better manners. “If you show me a ghetto,” he said in 2018, “I’ll show you somewhere a Democrat is in control.” Prosperity was a household. He named the three M’s: marriage, mating, and mortgage. “When you get married, have kids, and have to afford your mortgage, you have more skin in the game of America’s future.” President Trump made that household conceivable. In 2019, the Black unemployment rate fell to 5.3 percent. The difference is a father at the table and a church at the end of the block. Faith was the load-bearing wall. “There is a God,” his friends remember him saying, “and it is not us.” ABC News reported that he had gained tens of thousands of Black supporters. At Kirk’s memorial, President Trump said, “Charlie was actually a master builder of people.” I had given speeches with Kirk for candidates. I think now of that last afternoon at the Arizona Biltmore, the ballroom loud for Rep. Andy Biggs (R) in his race for governor and for Warren Petersen (R) in his race for attorney general. He moved through that hall, and later under the Utah tent, with a composure that carries the same grace Martin Luther King Jr. showed on the eve of his death in Memphis, when he said he had been to the mountaintop. It feels surreal to write that sentence. The promise of the country was “super simple”: work hard, play by the rules, marry, have children, and do not break the law. A check cannot replace a father. “If you have something based on merit,” he said, “I don’t care if it’s all Black, all Asian, all white.” What does Kirk’s memory mean on this first anniversary? It means that love does not flatter a people. The first civil right is the right to be expected to be good. A boy is a soul, whether in Phoenix or in Baltimore. Souls are not funded — they are formed. The unfinished work of this anniversary is the recovery of the household, the pulpit that still dares to say that God is God and that a man who begets a child owes that child his name. Kirk did not invent that creed. He had the nerve to speak it in rooms that had been taught to call it hate. If Black America takes him at his word in this twelfth month, it will not be because a white activist conferred permission. It will be because the data, the churches, and the memory of better order already knew he was right, and because a people tired of being pitied has decided, at last, to be free. The Rev.
