Microsoft Ships MAI-Image-2.6 With 1,336 Elo and 2.8x Faster Flash Microsoft's flagship text-to-image models exit preview on Foundry, offering a quality tier near GPT-Image-2 and a Flash variant tuned for high-volume pipelines. - MAI-Image-2.6 and MAI-Image-2.6-Flash are now generally available on Microsoft Foundry and the MAI Playground. - Flagship is a 20B-parameter flow-matching diffusion model outputting up to ~1536x1536 pixels. - Debuted at #2 on LMArena text-to-image with 1,336 Elo, 45 points behind GPT-Image-2. - Reports +79 Elo over MAI-Image-2.5 overall and +91 Elo specifically in text rendering. - Flash variant runs 2.8x faster than GPT-Image-2-Medium at under half the flagship price. - Effective cost around $0.039 per image, with per-token metering across text, image, and output. Microsoft has moved MAI-Image-2.6 and MAI-Image-2.6-Flash from public preview to general availability in Microsoft Foundry, according to its release post. The flagship prioritizes image quality, while Flash targets lower latency, higher throughput, and lower cost. Both are available to test in the MAI Playground. - What shipped: Two proprietary, hosted image-generation models for Microsoft Foundry. - What changed: The models have graduated from preview to commercial production use. - Why developers may care: The release combines reference images, targeted editing, web grounding, improved text rendering, and a lower-cost model for bulk workloads. The 1,336 Elo result in context Microsoft’s cited LMArena snapshot gives MAI-Image-2.6 an Elo score of 1,336, placing it 45 points behind GPT-Image-2 and 20 points ahead of xAI’s Grok Imagine Image 2.0. LMArena derives Elo ratings from blind, pairwise user preferences, with higher scores indicating more wins in those comparisons. Microsoft also says the MAI-Image family gained 283 Elo points and improved 61% faster than any competing lab over the measured period. Leaderboard positions change as votes and models are added, and the small lead over Grok falls within overlapping statistical ranges. Compared with MAI-Image-2.5, Microsoft reports a 79-point improvement across the full benchmark and a 91-point gain for text rendering. Better text generation is particularly useful for signage, packaging, advertisements, and interface mockups, where malformed words can make an otherwise usable image fail review. A 20B model built for controlled generation The flagship is a 20-billion-parameter diffusion model trained with flow matching and capable of producing images up to approximately 1536 by 1536 pixels. Flow matching teaches the network a continuous path from noise to a finished image, which can support stable generation with fewer sampling steps than traditional diffusion schedules. The production-facing feature set covers generation, grounding, and image editing: Flash cuts latency and unit cost Microsoft positions MAI-Image-2.6-Flash for applications that generate images at volume, including asset pipelines, batch personalization, and interactive tools. Under the company’s benchmark setup, Flash generated images 2.8 times faster than GPT-Image-2-Medium, delivered 72% greater efficiency, and cost less than half as much as the MAI flagship. The Design Arena values in the table come from a different evaluation view and should not be compared directly with the 1,336 LMArena score. P50 latency means half of measured requests completed within the listed time; it does not establish a latency guarantee or service-level objective. Workload, region, output size, concurrency, and provider capacity can change real-world performance. Token meters replace fixed image fees Foundry meters text input, image input, and output tokens separately. The final charge therefore depends on prompt length, reference images, output dimensions, and other request settings instead of a single fixed fee for every generated image. Arena estimated MAI-Image-2.6 at $38.90 per 1,000 output images, or about $0.039 per image, under its test assumptions. It also placed the model on its price-performance Pareto frontier, meaning no evaluated option in that comparison had both a lower estimated price and a higher preference score. Production teams should calculate costs from their own prompts, image sizes, retry rates, and editing patterns. From prompt to PNG Applications can access the models through the Foundry catalog or OpenRouter. Foundry supports Microsoft Entra ID and API-key authentication, while OpenRouter uses its own account, billing, and authentication layer. - Select a variant. Use MAI-Image-2.6 when quality has priority, or Flash when latency and unit cost constrain the workload. - Send the inputs. Requests can include a text prompt and up to five reference images, depending on the task. - Configure generation. Choose or infer an aspect ratio and enable supported editing or grounding features. - Receive the result. The service returns PNG output within the documented resolution limits. - Measure the workload. Track latency, token usage, retries, safety-filter responses, and output acceptance rates. Regional availability, quotas, rate limits, content filters, and data-handling terms may affect deployment. Teams should verify those settings in their Foundry region and repeat benchmark tests with representative prompts before moving traffic from another provider. Where each model fits Product mockups, campaign assets, signage concepts, branded graphics, and ecommerce imagery align closely with the release’s strengths. Five-image references can carry visual direction into a request, while targeted object and text edits may reduce the need for a separate inpainting stage. Both variants use proprietary weights and run as hosted services, so they do not support local checkpoints, on-premises inference, or weight-level control. Developers also need to validate exact spelling, brand compliance, object consistency, and grounded claims in generated images because preference benchmarks do not guarantee correctness for a specific production workflow.
